Pemba, lying 50km north of Zanzibar is a true island, rising sheer from great depth and topped with gentle, undulating hills and deep verdant valleys covered with dense clove, coconut and mango plantations.

The main reason people come to Pemba is for the marine life, so you shouldn’t be surrounded by hordes of holiday makers on a "beach" holiday. Because of this ‘exclusivity’ the island remains a pristine tropical wilderness and this extends to the surrounding marine environment too.

The outlying islands of Pemba are beautiful and completely untouched, with untrodden sandy beaches. Some have remote villages, others are uninhabited. Spending a few days on a boat in these waters is superb and you can sometimes have the whole place practically to yourself.

The waters around these islands are among the richest and most exciting in the world and home to thousands of species of tropical fish and other exotic marine life.

If you are into hanging out on boats, passing your days diving and snorkelling, lazing around on beaches that wont have seen another visitor in months, fishing for your dinner, building beach bbq’s and all that kind of thing, then look no further ... this is a real flop over the side and swim with the dolphins piece of heaven.

Winding your way around tiny coral islands past mangrove forest and across tropical lagoons, this will be your first glimpse of a remote, exotic, unspoilt, peaceful and incredibly beautiful piece of paradise.

Your days will be spent exploring and diving along Pemba’s west coast and its numerous islands, inlets and secret coves. If conditions permit, the dramatic East Coast can also be cruised. Jambo’s dive guides have been diving here for ‘centuries’ and know these waters as well as anyone.

Diving

Pemba is renowned for it’s unspoilt coral reefs but also for its vertical coral cliffs, which plummet to depths of more than 800 metres. With underwater visibility often reaching 60meters or more looking over the precipice of some of these outer walls can be a mind-blowing experience– you better watch out for the vertigo!

Dramatic and exciting coral reefs stretch as far as the eye can see. Napoleon wrasse swim side by side with the large pelagic game fish such as tuna, jacks, wahoo and barracuda as they hunt amongst the thousands of small, brightly coloured reef fish. Manta and eagle rays frequent the area, as do many species of shark. Giant groupers can reach lengths of 2 metres. Hawskbill and green turtles swim by, as curious garden eels peer out of their hides and whale sharks, pilot whales, dolphins, marlins and sailfish are also regularly seen by divers.

Although the SY Jambo is primarily a dive-liveaboard, this should not deter non divers – friends and partners from experiencing this unique high seas adventure. In addition to the diving there are loads of other activities and things to see and do.

There are 2 tenders are available for pottering about the creeks and bays or for picnics on the long white sandy beaches. You will most likely find yourselves heading out to one of the uninhabited islands in the area, rocking up at a paradise beach and enjoying a lunchtime bbq. Maybe do some diving and snorkelling on the way there and back and make a day of it. Chances are you'll have dolphins chasing you around all day.

Fishing can be a big part of the day especially if whatever you catch will be on the menu that night and there's something special about staying in a place where you can literally wake up and drop over the side to go snorkelling. Spice tours on Pemba Island can also be arranged.

Guided kayak trips are also available to explore some of the islands and coves at close quarters. Snorkel gear is brought along so you can roll off and explore the reefs as you go.

Food & Drink

Breakfast, lunch as well as snacks are provided along with soft drinks, juices and water all day.

Eating here is as much apart of the magic as the sunsets, the crystal clear waters or the snow white beaches. Chef prepares a mix of international and local dishes using fresh local produce and even fresh seafood depending on what you have caught. The occasional spicy local dish adds interest and he’s happy to cater to special diets. If you were too busy diving or sunbathing during the day to fish, then hailing a passing fisherman along side is a wonderful experience.

Hopefully their ancient wooden dhow’s will be bulging with crab, lobster and fresh fish - to be expertly prepared by your crew, while you sit back and enjoy a cold beer or a gin and tonic. Evening dinner will served on board, under a canopy of African stars - the gentle lapping of wave against hull and the night sounds emanating from the mangrove forests will be all that disturbs you.

In Pemba you’ll notice the absence of modern-man. There are no cars, no machines. Just the clink clink of the yachts rigging, the chatter of local fisherman, the excited shrieks of children playing in the villages, the splash of a dolphin, the gentle lapping of waves and the sights, sounds and smells of tropical Africa.

Itinerary in brief

Day 1 Depart Nungwi in Zanzibar and sail north to Pemba Island.
Days 2-6 Pemba Island and diving - The boat will anchor at different dive sites during the week for diving, with opportunities for going ashore to visit a local village, exploring the islands or just relaxing on deserted beaches.
Day 7 Return to Nungwi and Zanzibar
