Ibo Island offers all the ingredients of paradise and a journey to an era quite forgotten.
During the last 500 years Ibo has been one of the major trade islands along the coast of East Africa. Its long history is everywhere to be seen. The ruins of once grand colonial buildings and a beautiful old catholic church still line its streets and three forts still stand guard over the sea, their rusted cannons and crumbling ramparts all that remain of their once great power. Ibo island was formerly the capital of Cabo Delgado the northern province. Ibo's architecture and history rank closely to Ilha de Mozambique but its atmosphere and rustic charm is certainly unique. It is one of the most ancient settlements in Mozambique with Muslim traders actively established in the area before the 15th century. Traditional silversmiths make beautiful handmade jewelry found nowhere else in the world.
